More Graphic TMI....Recovery Milestone

So after three doctor appointments last week alone we have concluded that the antibiotics are working and my infection is clearing up...oddly though that even though the red-ness is going away, the sore-ness is not. In fact the soreness and pain seems to have been worse. I continued my regimen of soaking, cream and pills and tried to take it easy...this afternoon I did a soak and changed my dressing as usual, then later I went to take a shower and when I undressed I found something shocking. My bandage was soaked - no DRENCHED- in a bloody mucus! It looked like the world's largest pimple had popped or something burst...but when we looked at the infected area...nothing...after a minute...drip...drip...from an area of the incision that was noticeably swollen the past few days I was leaking...heavily. Wes and I were both alarmed and called my doctor who was easy to track down through his answering service. He said he was not shocked and saw this as a very good thing. He thinks that this is a draining that has built up and suggested i shower to clean it off and encourage it to come out- plus its coming from a "natural" opening. I agreed that the infected/swollen area looked better and the general swelling/sore-ness was significantly less - this strange scary overflow of bloody mucus was somehow a really amazing relief - I felt like i was dispelling the infection, the pain (to a degree) and finally encouraged to clean off and reassured I was doing things right. Hallelujah!

Today is Saturday and Wednesday is my next appointment...I feel like my recovery is finally getting somewhere and I am excited.

Cuase of Infection?

So today my doc was happy to see the signs of infection faded slightly and he told me that the culture they took Tuesday came back and it is confirmed that it is a staph infection. I mentioned the coincidence that earlier this year I went to the Emergency room with food poisoning with turned out to be staph related as well. My doctor was very intrigued by this and will get the records from my emergency room visit and see if he can make a connection. I think he is interested since a staph infection four weeks post surgery is so uncommon. We will see what turns up.

Infection

So about 3 days ago I noticed a redness on my right breast but didnt think too much of it, then on Monday it was still there and I figured it might be an infection. I didnt do anythign about it because I had an appointment with the doctor the next morning. The doctor confirmed that it was an infection and prescribed me some antibiotics and told me to "soak" the infected area a couple times a day and he wanted to see me again in two days. Last night I had chills and a mild fever as well and today I have a headache. Recovery is no fun but I am optomistic that this is only a minor roadbump and all will be fine.

Four Weeks Post Surgery

So up until a few days ago my biggest complaint was that the pads I wear under my special bra woulod stick to my still healing incisions and start to heal, then when I would move my body a certain way the scab would stick to the pad and pull off, opening the wound again...very annoying and painful. I talked to the nurse at my doc's office and she suggested a little bit of polysporin and some non-stick pads under the larger padding. I found some silicon-covered waffle non-stick pads meant for draining wounds and burns and it really helped the problem. there is still an area of the incision that does not want to close up and stop draining - doc/nurse both say its because this is the area that carries the weight of the breast and also doesnt get as much blood supply, so it will be very slow to heal. I am waiting for stuff to stop oozing to take a "normal" shower, as I dont want soap getting into the owie area. Sorry if this is all TMI!

I do notice that in general I am getting less pain and less "zingers"...the weird tingles in my nipples have stopped and the bruising is almost all gone. There are areas that feel a little numb, but I imagine thats part of the healing as well.

I tried sleeping on my side for the first time last night - I got comfortable with no pain for about 20 minutes before it started to hurt so I moved back over onto my back. This is now my #1 issue - SLEEP.

I have gotten into the bad habit of going to sleep very alte and waking up late, so to combat that I have been trying to take nighttime pain medication to make me drowsy - NOT WORKING. I am so uncomfortable on my back that I wait until I am so tired that I cannot keep my eyes open before I can fall asleep - usually this happens around 3am. Last night I was in and out of sleep all night and it wasnt until 7am that I really slept well - woke up at NOon!

Yesterday and the day before I felt pretty good and even got out of the house, which was nice. I know my days off are coming to an end and it makes me sad and happy at the same time. I really wanted to get more wedding stuff done, but I didnt want to push it.

Anyway- thats my latest, thanks for reading

The Bookshelves and the Cats

Back when my awesome Uncle Mike was visiting we had just moved into our place and I was having a hard time fitting things into a good spot and feeling good about the space. Uncle Mike offered to get me some bookshelves I wanted as a house warming and MAN - they are perfect for the room and space and provide excellent storage- I just LOVE it- Mister likes it too:
Now I have not gone crazy with cat photos in awhile, so here we go....Sawyer really got me with his nap on my purse....and Mister is just always cute:

Two and a half weeks

Two and a half weeks post op and I dont knwo what I expected, but I feel like the pain adn discomfort has not changed much in the past week. I still have to wear some surgical dressings under a soft, supportive wireless bra and I still cannot lift things or reach for things. The only real difference is the itching- im very itchy! And I do not look forward to bedtime because it is really hard to resist the urge to roll over on my side and its hard to get comfortable and stay asleep lying on my back. Everything else aside I know I am healing well and the time is flying by.

In other news, I got a hair cut about two months ago and I dont remember why, but I wasnt in a good mood before or after the cut...but I took photos anyway...not a real dramatic difference....but it is surprising how well you can see where I stopped dying my ahir red.....

My babe's Birthday

it's becoming a tradition...well two years in a row now...for us to go to this great pool hall in Emeryville called the Broken Rack for Wes' birthday. This place is very laid back and reasonably priced so we invited Wes' brothers and their SOs and our BFFs Matt & Haydee to come celebrate with some pool and cake! Here are my favorite photos from the night:

I don't have any interesting news in regards to the surgery, but I really enjoyed more visits from family/friends over the last few days - it's been really great.

I can also say I am probably trying to do too much, but i cannot stand sitting here waiting for somoene willing to do things for me- this part sucks....i am sore.

in other news I am processing some photos from back in January and here is some pics from our visit to the Oakland Zoo's "Zoo Lights" event with Jenai and Randy:
